Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within 12 months of engaging in unprotected sexual activity. A woman's menstrual cycle lasts between 21 and 35 days. However, some women may have a longer cycle, making estimating the ovulation date difficult. A woman with an irregular cycle ovulates 14 days before her next period. Calculating ovulation day becomes more difficult in women who have a longer menstrual cycle. Ovulation may be completely absent in some women. A woman over the age of 35 has a lower chance of conception because the quality of her egg begins to deteriorate as she ages. After a certain age, the quality and quantity of eggs decline. The likelihood of having a genetically normal egg decreases as one gets older. If a couple with a female over the age of 35 has not been able to conceive after 6 months of trying, a fertility evaluation is recommended.
