Numerous tiny, fluid-filled sacs proliferate inside the ovaries in PCOS. "Many cysts" is what the word "polycystic" means. These sacs are follicles, and within each is an immature egg. The eggs never develop to the point where ovulation occurs. The absence of ovulation modifies the levels of progesterone. There is an abnormally high androgen level but a low progesterone level. Women with PCOS have fewer periods than usual because of extra male hormones that interfere with the menstrual cycle. Physicians are unsure about the precise cause of PCOS. They contend that the ovaries are unable to produce hormones or eggs normally due to elevated levels of male hormones. Excess androgen production has been related to genes, insulin resistance, and inflammation. Body inflammation is frequently elevated in women with PCOS. Inflammation can also be caused by being overweight.
